Just about every job has this, so they will have to train people anyway. Smart businesses would take entry level positions that require little to no experience, with a 'promote from within' program. They could create their own skilled workers from a pool of lower paid unskilled employees. I've seen it with at least 2 companies that had this, and it's worked wonderfully for both the company and employees looking to make careers.

It also works pretty well for the employer, as usually it is more cost efficient salarywise to promote from within, rather than have to hire from the outside.

The problem is, too many businesses are short sighted and have terrible long term planning, so they don't do this.

I didn't read the article, but over half the time companies say things like this they want to pay skilled laborers 9 bucks an hour.

Makes me think of the stuff about factory work in China from last week. The Apple stooges were lamenting that the US doesn't have a labor pool that lies between an actual engineer and a high school kid who took drafting.

I'm pretty sure companies would love to pay ALL employees 9 bucks an hour. It's when it starts to hurt their bottom line they are willing to pay more and it just might be reaching that point for this category of workers.

I know a lot of machinists that left the field entirely after 9/11 and the great depression part 2. The pay is good but it isn't what it used to be and management is always looking for ways to make us more efficient. That generally means stacking shit, entry level jobs on to our already overly broad job description. Then having to deal with lay-offs that are just a structural part of manufacturing in America, makes the job somewhat unappealing. I've been a machinist for 15 years and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
