forgot the rest of that headline:

Factory job (creators) looking for skilled workers that have 30 years experience and an expert with every program that company uses and expect the pay of of a 22 yr old kid.

we have a shortage of skilled labour here to. A friend of mine works for an engineering company and had to go to Asia to find welders. they have incredible skills but it takes a long time for them to get used to all the the additional safety regulations that are required here.

2 companies in Atlanta can't find workers at $30/hr. Small companies.

But if they took their 40 jobs to a small town, people would be beating down the door to make even half that wage.

And the local vo-tech would provide the training free.

Actually it does take quite a bit of time to train a machinist, the apprenticeship program really works in that field but it doesn't happen over night. I've been advocating vocational schools for some time, many people aren't going to college but that doesn't mean they can't be trained as skilled workers.

Still, it's not like this shortage happened overnight, either. If they'd offered to train their new hires immediately instead of bemoaning the state of American industry they'd probably have some shop-ready people by now...probably not full-blown machinists, but some people who could at least operate the gear without losing a hand.

There are still some strong vocational training centers out there for both adults and high school students, but as others have mentioned there has been a lot less focus on manufacturing within those centers. Call it a bias against working types or whatever, but the bottom line is that it hasn't really been perceived as a secure line of work for many years now.

I can train a welder in a surprisingly short amount of time, of course there will always be some skills that only time can master.

There is more truth to this than most people want to admit.

Clearly the 13 year old Malaysian kid making $0.42 a day has been in a machinist apprentice program since he was 9 and is all set to go... or is it that he's worth training because you can pay him so little?

Any shift in demand for specific types of labor leads to this kind of thing. In addition people are being educated out of the field and not just in liberal arts stuff but computer type stuff. Nursing has been facing this issue for a long time so it isn't even all that unique to manufacturing.

I would also think that there are a lot of older people spread out across the nation that have the skills.

I didn't read the article, but over half the time companies say things like this they want to pay skilled laborers 9 bucks an hour.
