An 56 year old adult student at Michigan's Oakland University has been booted off campus and branded with sexual harassment and intimidation charges for some freeform writing in a journal he kept as part of a class assignment.

The class was apparently some sort of creative writing class. As is common, students were required to keep journals of freeform thoughts which might serve as the basis for future writing.

The man asked repeatedly if there was any sort of restrictions on what sort of journal entries could be in the book and was assured that there was no censorship and no restrictions multiple times.

At one point his teacher collected the journal, presumably to make sure students were taking it seriously and making entries and so forth. I have had profs that used this technique myself in college. Anyway, the guy wrote a "Hot For Teacher" (Van Halen 1984) inspired entry, describing his teacher as "tall, blonde, stacked, smart, articulate" in his essay according to the article.

At that point the college started proceedings against him and he's been booted out of the school, banned for 3 semesters, only allowed to return if he gets psychological treatment and clearance, the whole 9 yards...

It seems that there are few things as fragile and overstated as the egos of academics - ESPECIALLY academics in the Liberal Arts disciplines. This is a big laugher imo. Read the article for more about it!

I was an aspiring clinical art therapist in my second semester of a four semester graduate program at a Jesuit university, Loyola-Marymount- a 4.0 scholarship winning grant winning student. To this day, I am a natural art therapist. I only went into the field because it was an ideal match for my talents and I wanted to work with extreme mentally ill patients. I was in my 40's.

During a History of Art Therapy class taught by the director, Maxine Jung, I noticed my notes contained some ludicrous statements, This woman believed she crapped knowledge. We had an assignment. My response was to demonstrate a paradoxical intervention visually. At this time I was only composing mandalas, like Carl Jung did, and working with the symbolism. I created a quality aesthetic, stunning piece, called Clinical Dart Therapy. It was a dart board of sorts, filled with quotes from the director, Maxine Jung. The really absurd ones. I held up a mirror. She was furious. I was kicked out of the program.

Never do this, even if you are right on the money. The result will be you will be removed from the culture, no matter how open-minded the people are supposed to be. I would not do this again. Do I regret it-no.

What we do in life ends up being very unimportant in a long historical sense. But to us individually, it is extremely important. This is why I recommend people follow their innermost dreams and intuitions.

In your instance the man assumed since it was a creative class he could push the boundaries. He assumed those in charge were open minded. He was wrong.

The article seems to only contains facts from the student's point of view. It could be that he was making inappropriate comments all along during class, but the teacher had been letting it slide up until she saw the journal entry and she felt it crossed the line into stalker territory. It most likely wasn't just the journal that got him in trouble.
