Greedy profiteers are always to blame.
Especially when record profits are recorded on the heals of record prices.

People like to drive cars. More people have cars than they did in the past. We have less oil than we did in the past. Gas is expensive.  |

Speculators are using fears about Iran to drive it up currently. Also the failure of the Canadian pipeline had some good rhetoric attached to it.

Remember back when there were millions of gallons of crude pumping into the Gulf of Mexico 24/7 for months on end? Gas prices were like a dollar less per gallon they are now all through that debacle.
We're being played, as usual.

There is a glut of gasoline, we're exporting more than ever.
Demand is down.
Because of that, oil companies are actually shutting down refineries.
Oh, darn, that decreases the supply. Prices go up! Stockholders rejoice!

dollar devaluation by the Fed, when it was tied to gold, $35 bought 97 gallons of gas or be traded in for an ounce of gold by the US government
$35 now doesn't buy that 97 gallons or that ounce if gold
