My dad used to brew his own beer, and seriously considered opening a micro-brewery at one point because everyone who sampled it said it was the best they'd ever tried. If you know what you're doing and use quality ingredients, you can apparently make some good stuff, maybe better than store-bought.

90% of the people I know that have brewed beer (including me) have enjoyed it for less than half a dozen batches, then realized they can just buy the stuff for about the same amount of money and less work. That it's really just a time wasting hobby but other hobbies are more important.

1st batch is interesting
2nd batch is fun
3rd batch is really cool and experimental
4th batch is more experimentation with a little bit of "is this worth it?"
5th batch is "I could be playing Skyrim..."

The other 10% dream (or do) start their own breweries because they love it so much.

Actually its much cheaper to brew your own.
And it tastes a lot better.

Ill be growing my own hops this year and I've started harvesting yeast.
That's a $15 savings per batch.
I'm estimating 50-60 bucks for an average abv ten gallon batch.
That's about 5 or 6 cases of beer for around ten bucks a piece.

i use chocolate wheat in my milk stout recipe.
its friggin smooth and delicious.

wheat in the recipe tends to smooth the edges and round out the flavor a bit.
ive made a few. they are good.
wheat makes for a sticky mash, though, and i dont like working with it too much.

rye makes a great beer. i love the rye.
roasted barley is also a great flavor in beer. if youve ever had a black lager, like 2012, they are heavy on the roast and it stands out well in those beers.

if you live near a mircobrew or brewpub, go try some of their beers.
just because you dont like one specific style doesnt mean you wont like ALL of their beers.
there are more styles and flavors of beer than you can shake a stick at. ive made it my goal in life to try them all

thanks for the info! love wheat beer and have thought about trying the home brew kits...might have to give it a go.

Sweeny, you have a good IPA recipe yet?

I'm a big fan of hoppy beers, much more than of malt (stouts) and wheat bears.

You know I'm pretty sure you can buy all sorts of beer already made up for you.
