I won't go to the lake bed without a shower, the alkaline dust can really dry you out and eat up your skin. Our launch site is pretty forbidding and I like to be comfortable.

If you camp at high enough altitude then you wont run into many flies/bugs and the few you do run into are really slow moving and not much of an issue.
ORLY? Go above treeline in the spring in the first month after snowmelt!

Then maybe it's location - the last time i was above treeline was in the summer and it wasn't too bad as far as bugs go. There was snowmelt though.

The reason you might not have had bugs in higher elevations is there is usually winds and they will keep bugs away.

I only ran into really bad bugs once out of dozens of trips in the Sierra alpine country, but it was one of the worst batch of mosquitoes that I've seen. In the Cascades, I run into them every year in late spring/ early summer. I don't remember any mosquitoes in the San Juans of southwestern Colorado.

It's strange, I guess maybe we get lazier as we get older but I used to love camping outdoors as a kid and I flatly refuse to do it now.

I had a dream. It was an incredible dream. When I awoke, I had a huge mess to clean up.
