When you grow up in a family where such things are talked about a lot you might get a memory of being there yourself. I more blame someone's failue to do a little fact checking. Not as bad as many of Obama's statements but close enough.

It's not a lie that makes any sense because it's so easily disproven.
I think it's more likely he just remembers wrong. Which probably helps him with voters because it shows he isn't a robot.

Most of what we remember is really just bits and pieces, often just a couple headpoints. When you "remember" the event the brain fills in the spaces between those headpoints. And if you hear a well-told story as a child and imagine what it looked like there is a chance you'll "remember" that moment. Especially if you don't follow up on it in a way that you ask youself if that really happened you never realize it's just a figment of your imagination
