HDMI? What's that?

Explaining it in terms you would understand? That's a tall order. Uhm.. how about "It's Magic" and just leave it at that?

Look, I have no idea whether you usually plug a HDMI output into your ass or mouth, but you're doing it wrong.

Still not gonna get any sound out of that Raspberry thing on its own.

HDMI contains both the video and audio data. Whatever the HDMI cable is plugged into will need to output the audio channel to some sort of speakers.

I'm no geek. I will wait for the geeks to dream up awesome ways for me to care about this new device.

But in that case, you may still need to have some sort of receiver depending on what speakers you have.

Raspberry -> HDMI -> TV -> audio channel (probably over a fiber optic cable) -> receiver -> speakers

TVs aren't really known for having the best options for having speakers hooked up directly to them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think most TVs would split the audio back out to a new device.

Using HDMI to mix audio and video was a terrible design choice, IMHO, although I think it had more to do with controlling DRM than convenience.

Yeah to "some sort", indeed!

Still pretty dumb to link a pic to a big ass receiver and claim a Pi does away with all of it.
