So, what's the point of this device? I see it's supposed to be some sort of teaching tool to help people learn to write code...

Is it useful for anything else?

Of course - that's why geeks are going spastic over it

Just as a For Starters... for $35 you can turn all this:

It's a cheap as hell platform for development. Who knows what uses people will come up with for the thing, and at $35....anyone can play with it.

You could mount the thing, slap a LCD screen onto it (for under 30 bucks) and have a web surfing gizmo and e-reader for less than 70 dollars. Pop a cheap ass usb camera on, and you have video cam, for 40 bucks. A very small and very cheap video cam. 3.5 inch lcd touch screen for 20 bucks, and you have whatever the hell you can figure out to do with a tiny cheap computer with a touch screen. And on and on and on.....

OK I see... so tell me this:

I don't watch a lot of TV but when I do, if it's not a sporting event I watch mostly shows about shooting and firearms and hunting and zombies - this means an hour on Sunday, an hour on Tuesday, and about 3 hours on Wednesday until baseball season starts up again. I find myself very frequently wondering things like:

What other calibers could I get that S&W wheelgun in?

I thought that Doug Koenig was a Bianchi cup champ for a lot of years... how many again and when?

I wonder how I would go about getting an out of state hunting license for one of those muley hunts in Idaho... etc.

For this reason I have found myself wanting to have some sort of web browsing device that I can use but I am reluctant to spend $500 on some sort of tablet and a smart phone's web browsing interface just sucks.

Could I turn this raspberry thing into a web browsing wireless tablet for cheap?

Yes. Plug into any monitor you want (or attach one to it), plug in a USB keyboard and/or mouse, load up Debian or whatever with LXDE, open up Chrome....and surf away.

Hmm... I'd bet there'd be a nice little secondary market for cases for this thing too...

For about 60 bucks you could get a 7inch color touch screen display to hook up to the thing and with a little crafting and effort, make a fully self contained touch screen web browser. Well, have to plug it in still. Cost a bit more to graft on a battery pack and converter.

Of course, you wouldn't have to buy the screen new or anything, and you could get them cheaper than that in lots of 10 or 20.

You could in the grand sense that yes, that could be done, but not by you Give it a few weeks/months for us geeks to get our paws on it though and you'll start seeing some amazing mods

The hacks for using a touchscreen on Linux already exist. That and a USB wireless or even 3G adapter would be all you need.

It probably wouldn't be worth it though. Between the screen, the Raspberry, and the adapter you'd probably break even vs a 7" 1st gen Android tablet, which you can get on sale at Frys for about $75.

True dat.

It would be a LOT more powerful than any first gen cheapo tablet, but not less expensive. I saw one at Big Lots the other day for 49 bucks.

You wouldn't get the cool feeling of having made something yourself however, or the wonderful experience of fixing it every other day for the first 6 months you use it.
