Scientology is built around purchasing ever more costly 'training courses' as the only method of spiritual elevation (the purchase price being generally negotiable so as to best cost whatever the individual can not quite afford, unless they are celebrities).
It functions as a stereotypical cult in all ways of which I'm aware and was invented by a frustrated tax evader, who happened to be a drug addicted paranoid schizophrenic, for the sheer purpose of avoiding taxation while making him rich.
Other than that, it is nothing like most religions.
