Germany had a long history of talking and then invading. After so many lies you have to act. Russia was a surprise but Germany was the only real threat. To attack Russia would be impossible anyway. To declare war on Russia would have been insane. They were barely prepared to fight Germany.
The only chance they had was to invade Germany at the very start of the war, which they were mentally, politically and physically not capable of. After France quickly fell all Britain could do is hang on and hope Germany would do something amazingly stupid.
The best way to lose a war is to fight it too long. The only way to win a war is smash the other side, grab as much loot as possible and leave. You should always fight a war on the other sides land. You should never start another war before ending the one you are in. This is a lesson lost on our current government.
You cannot be both feared and loved so it is better to be feared. The key is to keep from being hated.
