The best thing that happened to the series was that Jordan croaked before he could expunge another 1000 page concerning the tea party of man hate and another 5 or 10 uninteresting women who does nothing to move the story forward..
I loved women before I started reading those books, now I resent them for everything!
Praise Thor for Brandon frikken Sanderson..
I got through 1-5 on my first read then just hit a wall on book 6, the sheer tedium of pages upon pages of badly written female charachters drinking tea getting upset with each other and pulling on thier hair made me want to vomit.
Started reading again when I found out Brandon was taking over the series, getting from book 5 to the first sanderson novel was a slog and a half, totally completely worth it for the new books though.
Yeah the new books actually did not make me want to climb the nearest tower with a high powered rifle and a bottle of whiskey.

Have you guys tried the audiobook? I've read the series at least two or three times and this go-round I'm listening to it. The first two books are completely different listening to the two narrators. Hopefully it'll be so different that the tedious books aren't a drag. Either way, it'll be good for me to study so I don't make the same mistakes RJ did.

I slugged through the series before the first Sanderson book came out, it was less horrendous on audio book the narrators are really good.
Well having a far reaching plan and having the ends of all the plot lines and sticking to it will prevent you from the quagmire that Jordan created, that and not hating women will probably help too. I'd also recommend creating a few interesting characters and sticking to them with some side characters, and not creating a endless horde of faceless unimportant dead end characters.
Men should also avoid writing from the point of view of women, I've never read a fantasy author that could pull it off without them becoming some sort of androgynous hybrid or overly girlish and or annoying and bland.
edit: except Eddings he co-wrote with his wife and their female characters turned out really well.

My books will span about 500-1000 years and will follow bloodlines and Houses. I'm still toying with the idea for reincarnation, at least for some characters.

Terry Goodkind has a sick mind. Some shrinks should read his work and report back on it

Never liked that kind of story telling.. Raymond e Feist did that he created really good characters who died off by old age and was left replacing them with "reincarnations" that were basically the same but inferior.
A strong lead role that develops over time into something different is always fun, and I'm not talking orphan who ends up a demi-god but how his personality and outlook evolves because of the situations he is in and the choices he makes. If you create several characters none of them will have the depth and complexity of a well thought out single character.
RR Martin is like the only dude who managed to create a gross of well thought out characters that evolves individually some we hate at start and learn to love and some we just find is meh, but he's rather successful at it.. But it still makes his plots move tediously slow because they all have to evolve and have their place in time, right now it feels like no one is moving forward in that saga.. and it's stagnated and he's falling into the pace of Jordan.

Humanity is twisted, awful and dark Terry just tells it how it is..
Just watch how war is done in sudan with rape being used as a weapon, Terry if anything only tells the story of how humanity is he's actually very balanced his main characters are not goodie goodie but actual persons who have to make difficult choices to advance and win.
He's not cherry picking or painting us in a way that we aren't. Another good analyst of human behavior is Joe Abercrombie his books are good, less BDSM rape and such horrors but generally good characters and a good story.. try him Bonkie.

Yeah, I know I've got to tread lightly, but the reincarnation line actually fits with the theme and background of the books. Plus, the story pretty much hinges on a long time-line, but I've done what I could to shorten the length and get around losing characters.
Plus, each book will have a main story line that intersects with a main character in the next book. Sometimes a main character in one book will come back as a side character in the next too. Not to mention, all stand-alone books have to have character development too, so I think I'll manage.

I hate it.. Character development is the most important part, then the story.. If you just jump from one character to the next the reader will probably not like it no matter how you twist it your first character will always be better then your later editions.
Not to mention that there is only so much originality, your characters might just merge into a androgynous blob of mediocrity because the writer often more or less personifies him or herself as the main character, the writers personality always infuses a character to a point until the character becomes a unique person in the writers mind and he or she starts to direct the character not on the basis of the writers personality but the personality that the character has evolved into.
Did I just make any sense at all?
