Yeah it really was. Fantastic concepts, but horrible implementation. It went free to play for a long time and eventually became renamed, repackaged, and profitable.

SWG had the best housing I've seen. You would wander out into the tatooine desert and stumble upon whole massive cities in the desert, complete with elected mayors, public buildings, guild halls, whatever else you can think of.

I was about to mention SWG as having a really good housing system. It was also helpful that houses were crafted instead of purchased, though it did mean that the uberguilds were powerleveling their crafters early in the game to make their halls for them.

The whole thing collapsed on itself when the player base went away, though. I think I finally had to disable guild invites entirely because you couldn't set foot into a player-made city without getting spammed with them, complete with promises of credits and your own house for free!

un-raidable housing is boring.

you shouldn't get any kind of huge benefits w/o some comparable risk.

They just dont figure it adds much to the game. In most cases it doesnt. The only housing that needs to be added to any game is guild housing for guild meetings and it should be instanced

it's good for the player experience to feel at home somewhere in a shared community.
it should be the sense of defending you home and your home tribe(s) that drive the game.

simply put, primal instinct coded into a Skinner Box = WIN.

Player housing is another time sink, it is amazing what people will enjoy in an MMORPG. I remember banksitters in UO they would outfit themselves in some of the best, most rare, nicest looking gear with the nicest mounts and just sit in front of the main bank so people could look at them.

DAOC housing had an awesome bug/feature that was soooo much fun.

one time, my son and i, trapped my brother in the basement of my house with boxes.
he flipped the f*ck out. that must be even better with people you don't know very well.
