Almost every UPS uses a standard 12v battery. Open the case and hotwire in some car batteries.

The fact that you are inquiring about batteries to make sure you can post on a forum when you lose power to your house does not surprise me.

Most high end systems don't draw 600 watts ever. I have a fairly high end system and the most I've ever seen it draw is 350 watts and that was while overclocking my graphics card and running burnin software to test the OC. And that was with the PC, Monitor and 2 other devices plugged in.
Here is what I use:
http://www.amazon.com/Cyberpower-CP1500AVRLCD-UPS-Display-8-Outlet/dp/B000FBK3QK
It will last me about 25 minutes of normal usage after a power failure.
For me, the most important usage has been to protect my system from brownouts and power fluctuations due to lightning strikes.

This is the model I have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102070&Tpk=CP1350AVRLCD
It will run for 20 minutes or so before the unit tells the software to gracefully shut down the computer.
