So is abortion.

The government hasn't made abortion required as a prerequisite to another medical procedure.

Many countries that allow euthanasia require a medical evaluation of the patient's mental and physical condition before allowing the procedure to go forward.
Why is asking for a similar equivalent to take place before abortion, found to be outrageous by posers pretending to be championing women's rights?

A traditional ultrasound is painless. Why require specifically a transvaginal one? I can't find anything saying it produces better results, or can procure them earlier in the pregnancy. Why does it have to be the ultrasound method that can cause pain?

It doesn't have to be. Suppose the people that oppose this specific method just suck and proposing a compromise.

Or perhaps it was repeatedly proposed, but rejected because the intent behind it is to potentially cause pain (or fear of potential pain) as a deterrent? Or worse, as a vindictive punishment to the would-be abortionist?

Or perhaps you hate women and will not afford them the benefit of an ultrasound so they can make a more informed choice. Grats on your misogyny.

My understanding is that, in the first trimester which is when the large majority of abortions take place, the external ultrasound doesn't give a very clear picture, because there really isn't much to show.

As to a more informed choice. More informed how? She already knows she is pregnant. if there does happen to be an occasion where an ultrasound will produce useful information, shouldn't that then be a decision between the woman and her doctor? Right wingers are supposed to be against big government, government coming between a person and her doctor and against mandates.

Since the government is mandating this treatment, shouln't it have to pay for it? And, why is it only mandating it for women who want abortions? If the information is so vital that the government forces it to happen, shouldn't ALL pregnant women be forced to get the ultrasounds?

Finally, if informed consent is so important to you, I assume you are completely against the Arizona law?

Oklahoma has already passed a similar bill.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/04/28/carr.abortion.oklahoma/index.html?hpt=T2

It's terrible legislation.

I'm betting the AMA revokes the medical license of anyone caught doing it.

That doesn't make it ok for this law to pass however.

Didn't read the whole thread.

Wanted to point out that this isn't an 'optional' way to doing an ultrasound - it's necessary during the early stages of pregnancy as it's the only way to 'see' a fetus that is that underdeveloped.

It's typically used in pregnancies that are less then 8 weeks along.
