Generally, when studying the possible cancer effects of an ingredient, lab rats are given huge amounts of the stuff. The rational is that if lots of the substance causes cancer in a small group, then smaller amounts will cause an increase in the rate of cancer in much larger groups.

As there aren't really any good ways of determining if something increases cancer rates in a large population, we have to depend on studies like this. There are, of course, problems, but, better safe than sorry seems a reasonable policy, especially if it is about something trivil like food coloring.

It's funny that they phrase it that way. Why didn't they say "Coke and Pepsi eliminate cancer risk."

Seems like an accurate title considering the cola rep is quoted as saying they don't believe the warning follows good science osemthin.

And, I suspect their lawyers told them that if they admitted a cancer link, they'd be opening themselves to thousands of lawsuits.

I don't trust the CSPI or CA officials on this. I'd like to see the official FDA statement, or at least how Coke extrapolated it. As much as I am sure that Coke and Pepsi would happily give every kid in America AIDs to make a better profit, this doesn't pass the smell test at face value.
