Apparently the guy who reported on the horrible working conditions in the Chinese factories made it up.

unlikely, although i'm sure Apple doesn't mind it... but This American Life hates admitting they were wrong and retracting a story is a huge deal for them.

Yeah I heard the original story and the retraction. Nice to see journalists own up when they report inaccurate information.

It's not that the working conditions aren't horrible and that people aren't being brutalized by Foxxcon. It's that the guy who told the story claimed he met all those people and had first hand knowledge of their plights. He didn't. He lied. This American Life (My favorite show on any form of media ever) screwed up by giving this liar a platform to share his lies.
I'm disappointed that they allowed something this crap to get thru their filters, and saddened that their reputation as honest and reliable journalists has been severely compromised by doing so. I'm glad they didn't try to make excuses for their failure however.
Anyone looking at this incident as evidence that Foxxcon isn't a horrible company and that Apple isn't god damn evil for using them...is a mouth breather however.
It would be like using the fact that some guy claimed to have saved thousands of Jews during the holocaust and ended up being a guy who actually spent the entire time working as a CPA in Orlando as "proof" that the holocaust never happened.
IOW....stupid and illogical.

This American Life is one of the few remaining examples of quality journalism left.

Still too evil of a company for me to buy from. Their constant misuse of new technology to increase their profit margins by setting their own prices is not just bad in moral business, but bad for the consumer
Apple offers VERY little in the field of research and development. They offer even less to contributing to technology. They harvest new technology from other companies and capitalize on it. A good thing, but they do it in a bad way.

eh, yeah... the guy is a liar and a douchebag, but that doesn't mean Foxconn doesn't have some problems.
that said, they're also probably way better than some of the other manufacturers out there - so if you own an xbox 360, sony playstation, PC, etc you can't really single Apple out.
