Battle of Panipat (3rd iteration) during the Afghan/Marathas(India) war saw around 200,000 people dead in a single day. That included about 70,000 combatants (from both sides) and more than 100,000 prisoners of war and civilians from the city of Delhi who were lined up and chopped to death with knives and axes after their forces lost the battle.

The Mongols managed to do so much damage to Iraq in a few short years that it has never really recovered to this day. For sheer destruction of a flourishing civilization they might take the cake.

Interesting that no one has mentioned Hiroshima, which killed between 100K and 150K with one weapon, many of them burned to death or dying of radiation sickness...which is about the worst way to go you can think of.

Not that many I don't think, at lesat comparatively. Alexander beat the Persians in two big pitched battles, and the vast majority of the Persian cities surrendered to him after that rather than resisting. I'm sure a fair amount of people died in the battles but they were just battles like any other battles of the ancient world. Alexander wasn't known as being particularly into slaughtering civilians the way the Mongols were.
Timur was also another right bastard who made his name killing civilians in the middle east and central asia and building towers our of their heads.
