Chemical and biological weapons have been in use for centuries at least.

At least to say the least...

They were in use prolly during the first war our species ever fought...

The chemical weapons in WW1 were so bad that half the time it was more of a danger to the troops using them, the chemical agents were also crude and heavy so they tended to gather and linger in low areas.

WWI also had charges through barbed wire while getting shot at by machine guns. It was a horrible mix of new powerful technology and outdated tactics.

It's WWI that is generally considered the most gruesome, no?

The most gruesome American war was the civil war though, hands down.

I would say WWII was the most "gruesome", just given the sheer numbers of civilians that died. Edit: But, yea, WWI was pretty nasty too now that you mention the mustard gas.

Worst was stupid commanders thinking they could mass charge machine gun emplacements. (See Battle of the Somme )

No argument on the Civil war being the most gruesome specifically for us.

WWI sucked ass.

Mud. Disease. Machine guns. Trenches (with mud, disease, fungus).

Mustard gas, often vs folks with no masks who hadn't heard of chemical weaponry prior to that.

Ooooh, then newly developed tanks mowing down humans.

Nasty-ass war.

I read somewhere that casualties were actually higher in the American civil war than any other major war as a % of total combatants. Higher than WWI. That might be wrong though.

Sounds about right actually.

Gettysburg saw 51,000 casualties in just that one battle. Given that they were all Americans it was pretty gruesome.

Still, WWI had its share. The Battle of the Somme had the worst single day casualties in the history of Europe:

"The British had suffered 19,240 dead, 35,493 wounded, 2,152 missing and 585 prisoners for a total loss of 57,470"

Keep in mind, that was 57,470 casualties in under 12 hours of combat.
