For 1000s of years adults in hunter gatherer tribes worked about half the hours a day that we do. Then they ate, drank, BS'd around the fire.

I think it is just part of human evolution. Before the age of Jesus people had multiple gods they preyed too. They looked outward for gods. It was a step forward in the evolutionary process for people to look for God within.

Probably more due to a lack of medical care than working, eating, and drinking habits.
