If the bag itself is $450 I imagine the whole setup is considerably more.

That's a lot of money for some people. Seems like they should be optional.

As I understand it, the sudden deceleration from the seatbelt in an accident at reasonable speed will still eff you up pretty badly. The airbag is designed to make that a little less traumatic. They're not a perfect solution, but then again neither are seatbelts. There are rare instances where being thrown clear of the car would be preferable.

I do wonder what will be the next automobile mandate, though. On Star? Computer controlled driving?

A lot of times even in a minor front end collision, when the air bag deploys it shatters the windshield too.

My macroecon teacher at Alabama was using a personal story like that to illustrate how sometimes regulations can affect the marketplace. His daughter had gotten into an accident and instead of it being something he could take care of out of pocket he had to go through the insurance company because the airbag deployed and the windshield had to be replaced (making the accident > $500 more costly than it would have been otherwise).

If the world worked your way, you'd have to fork over 15 golden dubloons to Acme corporation just to cover your commute to earn 18 golden dubloons from Acme corporation. Oh, and the fee would be increasing 20% next year.

I would think insurance companies have a lot to say about the installation of airbags in a car.
