If the victim had been burned to death, but the police had sent the two kids home, saying they acted in self-defense, I suspect it would have gotten a bit of attention.

Depending on the news day, quite possibly. Fox, if no one else. Then, everyone else would jump in.
But, first degree burns? That's not exactly Crime of the Century material. Why do you think it should be a national story?
Last winter, I think it was, the male in a black-white couple got beaten up, here in Buffalo, by racists. Was a fairly big story around here for a week or so, but, never went national, nor should it have.
Stuff like this goes on all the time, but no one really pays attention untless someone dies and there is some kind of hook in the story.

The story sounds suspicious. Doused with gasoline and set on fire but he only suffered first degree burns?
I'm skeptical. Is that even possible?
