I'm glad Germany has a very robust self defense law. The general rule is that you can defend yourself (and your property) against unlawful attacks with whatever means necessary/available. You do not have to give in or run away or whatever. Even though that would probably often be the smart choice.
On the other hand we do not tend to shoot each other a lot over quasi imagined slights.

I don't understand the question. The guy was getting a savage beating, he wasn't in a position to flee and he certainly had the right to save his own life. Anyway, the DA made the right choice. Open and shut.

Chester (53) chases down Daley (60) in the street. Punches him so hard he breaks his jaw and cheekbone. Chester has Daley down on the ground and is continuing to beat him while Daley yells for help. Daley shoots Chester repeatedly.
Daley has no duty to retreat in Florida.
Daley retreated anyway.
Only when trapped and receiving great bodily harm did Daley fire his weapon.
How the hell is there any conflict here? Good shoot.
