When I was married I registered my wife's name on a star. Can I change it now? Can I sell it? I was thinking about selling the naming rights on "Craig's List" but I don't want to run into trouble. What are the legalities of this? Could my ex come back and sue me?

You have to travel to the star to change its name.

Since the ISR has no legal rights to name astronomical bodies, and any names assigned by it have no legal standing anywhere with any recognized astronomical or governmental bodies......you can do whatever the hell you want with it, since the "name" you bought doesn't exist outside of a book published by some guy who lives in Illinois.

Only the IAU (International Astronomical Union) has the right to name any stars or other celestial bodies in space.

So yeah, like Ptilk said, you just paid to have a fancy sheet of paper in a fancy book that doesn't matter, sort of like the Who's Who books they used to sell to high school students, or those guys who claim you can buy an acre of land on the moon.

The Outpost is a humbling place to get a reality check

You should double down and see if you can get a black hole named after her.
