I think he was stupid to plead guilty because the publicity guaranteed that he was going to be nailed to the wall regardless.

I guarantee that millions of others in the UK say things every day that could get them jailed under these laws, but nothing is done about it.

Just goes to show you how limited free speech is in the UK:

He would have got nailed to the wall harder if he hadn't plead guilty. The statute authorizes prison terms of up to seven years.

Yeah... the presence of these laws have surely helped to abolish racism - nothing like placing people under arbitrary and subjective laws and then capriciously prosecute them based on a day-to-day ever changing interpretation of that same law. Definitely that won't make people bitter over race or propagate negative feelings about it one little but... noper, not a chance...

some sissy posted:

The messages were forwarded to the police by several members of the social network, including former England striker Stan Collymore, himself a victim of abuse on Twitter.

Im all for free speech. IN this country you can even threaten public figures. Of course the FBI will interview you but most cases unless you are really dangerous they will let you go

Free speech!

it doesn't surprise me. i've come to expect this level of stupidity out of England after they arrested a guy for possession of a illegal firearm when he tried to turn in a sawed off shotgun that someone had dumped in his back yard at a police station.

Here is how fucked English law is with this stuff:

Noted Science Author of "Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial" Simon Singh writes in a column for the Guardian -

"ou might think that modern chiropractors restrict themselves to treating back problems, but in fact they still possess some quite wacky ideas. The fundamentalists argue that they can cure anything. And even the more moderate chiropractors have ideas above their station. The British Chiropractic Association claims that their members can help treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying, even though there is not a jot of evidence. This organisation is the respectable face of the chiropractic profession and yet it happily promotes bogus treatments."

For this he was charged and found guilty of Libel of the BCA - potentially leaving him impoverished.

(Gratefully he did win his appeal after some of the worlds most notable scientists voiced their outrage)
