Went morel hunting first time ever

Morel's don't really have any recognizable flavors. If I had to describe it abstractly I'd say drink a small glass of warm milk through a dirty straw made from bark.
BUT! You add a bit of salted butter and beef or chicken stock and shazam, complex flavors with an interesting texture!
Don't pick yellows, they suck. Grey all the way.

I went out for them last Friday..the may apples and blood roots are already up..but no shrooms.
What state do you live in Friar?

Are you crazy? Yellows are like a piece of steak..they taste like nothing else in this world.
Now, my least favorite are the dog peckers..or woods mushrooms..but if that's all there is, I will be frying them up.

Morels and Shaggy Manes are the 2 easiset to spot and safest to consume of all wild 'shrooms.
They each have a 'false' version which is supposed to look like them (not REALLY but there is a resemblance) and neither is a poison.
Base of white pines is where I find mine. Some years just scraping away a few years deposit of needles will make the spores burst through.

Western MO. Had plenty of rain, cool nights and warm days. I was told that's a good combo for morels (although it's still a bit early)

I hope this year is a better year than last year for morels around here. Last year was horrible.
Two years ago we found so many I almost felt bad for taking them all. I still have a bit of dried ones from then that I will add to eggs or make a sauce with.
Best mushrooms ever!
