A 2008 study from Journal of Risk and Uncertainty explained that households earning under $13,000 per year spend about 9 percent of their income on lottery tickets on average, or around $645 a year.

Holy crap, but people are dumb.

It's enough to start making you believe that RWNs are at least a little bit right about poor people.

I wouldn't want to live in a world without hope.

it really isn't rocket science. Why do you think there are more and more casino's in our deteriorating central cities? They serve to recycle most of the social welfare transfer payments back into the government coffers. In Milwaukee the downtown casino has lines three deep at every slot machine after the gubmint checks come in.

Yeah, it seems like the people that can afford it the least play it the most.

If you invested that money for 30 years, you'd have a base of $20,000 more to retire on. Considering most of America only has $30,000 saved for retirement, I'd say that's a pretty hefty bump in your standard of living.

Those people are actually better off than many of the ones who win

Lotteries are an awful way for the government to raise money.

That seems unlikely.

This seems like an article thrown together quickly for the mega millions craze and I bet they misread a study as they quickly scanned it.
