My ancesters owned slaves. I only learned this recently. They showed up in the 1790 census in virginia as owning 9 slaves. Of course I think slavery is wrong and it was wrong for them to own slaves, but it makes me wonder why they thought it was okay and if they treated them well or not. Especially because they were scottish immigrants that came here most likely to escape persecution by the english because of their race.

I detest the thought of owning another human being. There were a few "benevilant" slave owners that purchased slaves to "save" them from bad slave owners. Even some free blacks purchased and owned slaves to "save" them. It would ease my mind some if I knew that my ancestors were one of these few, but there is no way to know.

My family owned slaves as well.

They owned a plantation near Atlanta. It was destroyed by Sherman.

It broke my family financially, and resulted in them spreading out around the South East before settling mostly in Southern Georgia and North Florida.

It was deserved though.

Slavery is a terrible institution, and it is almost always brought to an end through terrible violence and bloodshed.

Nothing is free. Eventually the balance gets paid.

That depends, would I be able to purchase white slaves?

Keeping and raising slaves was was very expensive back in the day and the cost of each slave was very high. Its much more efficient now to use machines and wage slaves. Some wage slaves like illegal aliens are really exploited

Industrialization and the use of wage slaves in the North is what really doomed the institution of slavery there. This was happening in the South too but they didnt want to make the inevitable change

duh, of course! white people are the "jack of all trades, master of none."
pretty much a solid investment for people who can't afford several specialized slaves.

Do you know how much I could make if I didn't have to pay employees?
