lol, Country wasn't incredibly popular in NC, at least where I lived
Country is more of a texas thing, and texas is texas it isn't the south

I hated country music for the longest time, but I think that was due to growing up with only a country music radio station available through my teens. It's definitely not the only thing I like listening to. Some of it is really good though. I've been digging some of the country/rap collabo's too.

The roots of Rock and Roll are what today would be considered country music. The music is simple and appealing, I,IV,V chord patterns are pleasing to listen to. However when you put lyrics to it....all bets are off.

Waaaaaaay back when, country and blues were the same music. Then, in order to market the music, record labels began to brand the music. The same song, sung the same way by a black guy was called blues. When sung by a white guy it was marketed as country. In time they diverged. But they share the same roots. That's why old country and blues are both about loss and heartache.
