A lot of peole who would never shoplift from the local market or steal someone's identity and defraud their bank account have a completely different feeling on pirating media from large corporations. The corporation can certainly afford it more than the individual or the small business, and they undoubtedly gouge customers. Does that create a justifiable cause that doesn't exist in those other cases?

Stealing isn't the same thing as copyright infringement. Like the difference between robbing a liquor store and being a home brewer who makes an exact copy of their favorite commercially available beer.
Ok, more like having a friend who is a home brewer and he gives you the beer after he makes it.

Too bad government is not accountable for the theft they perpetrate on individuals and corporations

No moral distinction. However, its so easy and such a small chance of getting caught and punished that you do it anyway. We are an imperfect people.

Theft and copyright infringment are different things...so yeah, a different reaction to them is warranted.

We make distinctions between corporations all the time wrt our laws (just look at how much more awesomer corporations get treated during the bankruptcy process v. ordinary Americans) so I don't see why there can't be a distinction here.

Would it be cool if a foreign country just pirated all of our media for free?
What about copying the design of an ipod or a drug or a car or a plane?

It doesn't, which was the point of my rhetorical questions!
The US is largely a country of ideas, knowledge, and culture. We are not just simple producers because in this day and age it is not that hard to find people that can produce stuff. It is much harder and more expensive to find things worth producing.
We are in an age of design and information which is much harder to control than a simple object.
