The trouble with the death penalty is that there have been RARE cases where it fell upon innocent people.
Me, I think it should be used BUT only where no possibility of error can be quantified. A 'reasonable' judgement of guilt would not be ebough to execute, only incarcerate.
People like Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka in Canada are not worthy of preserving. In the latter case, because she testified to enable conviction of Bernardo, she was actually given a short sentence - she should have gotten life with no parole and him be hung.

That settles it. I am now pro-death penalty, pro-abortion, pro-war.
We need to invade somewhere new and give out free abortions to all their populace.

I can see this as the perfect place to compromise.
Take the Death Penalty off the books in all 50 states and kill Social Security and Medicare.
Done deal.

A person is usually sentenced to death by 12 of their peers, not just a government official. The people have a direct say in the matter.
In any case, though I have little concern for people on death row, it's become such an expensive and drawn out process that I'm not really sure it's worth it. What's the point of pursuing the death penalty when it could work against the prosecution (people are rightly less likely to send a man to death than life in prison given the same evidence) and there's always the possibility for a mistake which ends an innocent man's life.
