My husband's uncle has had cancer for awhile... it had spread to his bones even, the vertebrae in his back. Even if he had made it, he'd have been in a wheelchair the rest of his life. The damage was just too widespread.
Last week, he contracted pneumonia... and his body was already severely weakened, both from the cancer and the immunosuppression that is a general side effect of cancer treatment.
We just got the call. He's dead.
Crap.

Thank you, it is appreciated. It's not like we didn't know it was coming, but ... yeah. It still sucks.

Same with my Grandpa recently, but you know this.
No matter how much you know and how much you expect it, it still hits you like a ton of bricks. It's been over 3 months and I still can't believe it happened... I hope you fare better.

Thanks, guys. We'll be alright, I think.
My husband's father died of cancer about a month after we were married. That was pretty damn rough. The last time I saw him alive, he had no hair from the chemo and there were even... erm, lumps... that were close enough to the surface in places that you could feel them. His mood alternated between the seriousness of a man putting his affairs in order, resignation, and ... well, I'd call it a hair-raisingly cheerful morbidity.
My husbands father sat there in his easy chair in the den, ran his hand above his collarbone and homed in on a lump. He prodded it a few times, gave me a sick grin, and then said to me, "Hey, come here and touch it, you can feel this one!"
I did as he asked, but oh my god...
I'll never forget that. I only hope that when it is my time to go, I can retain something of a sense of humor about the situation, like my father-in-law did.
Anyhow, it was the brother of my husband's father that died earlier this week. I was really worried about how my husband would react to it, but he's taking it fairly well.
