Yes, countries all around the world, including most of South America, gained their freedom at the same time. If you know anything about the logistical aspect of war and the very, very heavy wars that were going on in Europe at the time you can understand how it was relatively easy for these things to happen. Just saying, what if. They still pay really high taxes over there, just thought it was an interesting idea to consider all the major things that have happened since then, and how they might have been affected if independence was not widely as gained.

Also it is true that slaves played a big part of some of the economical development here, the US has been primarily an agricultural nation from the start, but we did not need exactly an unpaid, mistreated slave system to accomplish this. Yes they have been replaced by industry but slavery was not really one of the central points I thought about, just throwing that out there.
