Don't need to buy the game, just the $15 bucks a month to keep your account active.

I would try the free trial though. I love DAoC but if you are wanting PvE and have been playnig the newer RPGs like you stated I don't think DAoC will fit your reqs as this game is old graphically and mechanically (no mail system or account wide vault which is standard now in all MMOs generally).

I would still give it a try. A good fit for you probably would be:

Lord of the Rings Online (free to play, great PvE, good graphics and a great community)

Final Fantasy XIV (PvE heaven. It is what Square Enix does and they do it well)

and as a LAST resort

World of Warcraft (CRAPPY community, crappy graphics but runs on any computer and is all about PvE)

Everquest trumps all those pve games.

2 best games out, hands down DAOC and EQ2

WoW is for children, or adults that act like chicldren.

best PvE MMORPG made, Everquest 2

pvp - DAOC

lord of the rings? really? only class that heals is a bard? WTF, was a good game till level 15 where your spec choices are none. toons are pretty much the same.

I never played EQ2 (or EQ for that matter) hence why I didn't comment on it.

Really? actually i find LOTRO really nice for a free game, i tried the Craphammer free thing and it was /puke but LOTRO is nice, tons of stuff to do. is a VERY nice break from DAoC when i need it, and it costs me $0!

It pains me to say this, as I firmly believe DAoC to be the best game ever made, but I wouldn't recommend it to you as your first toe dip.

It's a mere shadow of it's former self and the community overall is terrible now. In fact there's only one wholesome person left playing (Tigs) and I haven't even seen her in a long while.

I second trying LOTRO to get a feeling for the genre.

If you like it then maybe wait for something like RIFT to come out. It looks to be a good game (course they all do until they get released so you never can tell until then) and most importantly the community is shaping up to be really really good. Also it is going for the first truly interactive and dynamic world which if they can pull it off will be revolutionary and pretty damn cool. As in it's constantly changing..you go back to a village it's not always the same, it may have been raided and destroyed, or grown into a city since last you came, stuff like that.

The key is the community as much if not more so than the game, and the vast majority of the good people are long long gone from DAoC .

Some of us are just too stubborn to let go though (nowhere to go isn't helping either )

If you do try DAoC and end up thinking "wow everyone here is an ahole" don't let it discourage you, it doesn't mean other games will be the same.

I don't think you have played LOTRO recently or very much as a matter of fact.

Minstrels can heal, yes...but so can Captains and Runekeepers...even a Loremaster has a heal.

In my opinion LOTRO has the very best environment graphics I have seen in a MMORPG, the landscape, scenery, and attention to detail (like flocks of migrating birds) is just amazing. The character models outside of the equipment and clothing are not very advanced however.

I do think EQ2 has the richest amount of PVE content, but LOTRO has an incredible feel to it, since both now are free to play, I would try them both if you have the time.

EQ2 has just an amazing amount of content. It's pretty much endless.

Way way to much zoning though, you can't go 10 feet w/o having to zone. So much so that it's actually a deal breaker for me. Especially when compared to the game who's name shall not be mentioned.

Everyone permanently on carpets is annoying too, unless that changed.

Other than that it was a good game, and yeah the pve content is sure there. If you ever run out of content in eq2 you need to think about how much time your spending on a game .

If you are more interested in pve, why not try gaheris? Lots of good people over here and I'm sure you would get any help ya needed.

Part of playing an MMO is the "Massive" portion of it. Gaheris population is just too sparse nowadays except fort he most hardcore DAoC'ers.

Starting in an MMO where the populations maxes at maybe 100-120 in primetime (and 80%+ are max level) is not going to be a good experience.

PvE on Ywain is dead, buried and rotted.

I agree with some of the other posters - for good, viable PvE go with EQ2, LoTRO or even WoW.

Don't be discouraged by all the negativity you read hear about WoW. There's a deep hatred of the game within the DAoC community (some subconscious blaming of it for the decline of DAoC I think).

Yes, the community in WoW tends to be much younger than DAoC but at least that explains some of the behavior you will see there.

The current DAoC playerbase has the highest % of asshats I have ever encountered in any MMO, going back to UO beta days.

Despite all the negativity about WoW here, at least the game is continually updated and works - DAoC can claim neither these days. There are multitudes of bugs, game mechanics that are flaky/downright broken and server performance has been on the downslide ever since Ywain-enstein was created.

Bottom line: DAoC is not a game for newcomers. It's best appreciated by people who played it during it's glory days or those who are hardcore about PvP. If neither of those describes you, then your best bet is to move on to another game.

The only way I could see someone enjoying DAOCs PVE is if they are a lore buff, and like the Arthurian/Nordic/Celtic lore/setting. If that's the case, the classic zones have some lore based quests/monsters that I found pretty interesting. The problem is you're going to mostly be doing it solo.

If you've played the Warcraft games, WoW is kinda neat to play from an exploring the world aspect, and if you have a group of friends to play with doing dungeons can be pretty fun, but I can count the number of good experiences I've had with a pick up group in that game on one finger.

A lot of people didn't like it, but Warhammer is free up to level 10, and in my opinion is a lot of fun at that level. So if you want to try out some pvp that would be a good place to start, because if you are low level you get boosted to level 8 which helps you compete against the higher level players.
