Hi,

I'm an old adventure gamer (started out playing "Cave" on a PDP 11/70 in the 70's!)whose recently retired and looking to explore an online RPG. I've been playing all the new RPG's: dragon age origins, oblivion iv etc and now want to get into online gaming.

What I'm looking for is a well developed world to explore. I'm far more interested in PvE than PvP at this point.

After reading meny reviews of DAOC I thought that this maybe the world for me, however after reading more recent reviews and browsing several forums I'm not so sure.

Is it still possible to fully explore the PvE aspect of the game?

Whats the best server for this?

Do I need to purchase the game and all expansions on CD-ROM?

Any help in answering my stupid questions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

you no longer pay for the client, you only pay for activation of the account.

now im all for getting new blood into the game but daocs pve is far from the best option.

from what i have heard and experienced, gaheris the pve only server is a bunch of cliques of pve elitist ~

and as such, you most likely better off just playing on the normal cluster of ywain. as for pve on ywain, i think alb is the only realm that still does alot of pve raids may it be darkspire, ml10, mainland dragon, and i even saw them trying to get a SI dragon raid going.

i dont play much anymore to know who the more pveish guilds are across the 3 realms but as far as i know, solic from albion avengers ? is pretty legit on his pve adventures and is usually the one running the raids. i would speak to him if you are interested.

but you must also realize the best aspect of daoc is its pvp!

good luck to you~

Would love to get new players in DAoC.

Now having said that, i would say that DAoC Pve is probably NOT your best option.

I recently started the free play for LOTRO(Lord of the Rings online), i played LOTRO in beta but stopped at release, but i have to say WOW!!!! they have really made that a cool game. The pve is awesome, ton of places to explore, all from the Tolken set of books in Middle earth.

I Love DAoC dont get me wrong, but DAoC is PvP/RvR, LOTRO is all Pve with some PvP mixed in and its FREE if you want to play it. YOu can subscribe if you want!

Try the free 14 day trial and find out. Ywain servers are a good place to start.

There's still people pve'ing in Daoc, but yeah, the really good stuff happens in pvp/rvr.

Try the free 14-day trial (and activate account and continue to play the very same characters, if you so choose to), and you could try it out for yourself (lvl 50 pve is better then the lvl 1-40, but it's not worlds apart).

And yeah, if/when you join up, choose one of the Ywain(1-10) servers, it's just 10 different servers for the housingzone, since all players wouldn't be able to get a house otherwise, the actual action happens all together.

For a PvE guy as yourself, I'd say that these two things might give you extra enjoyment/have a nice value for you:

- The housingzone, a few different house to choose from (looks quite different, realm-wise), where you could place monsters heads, weapons and other great (and not so great) items/slayed foes, etc, at the walls. Decorate the garden, change the choosen house itself to some degree, etc.

- If my memory serves me correctly, Daoc got 45 different classes, and there's just 1 class that all 3 realms got (the Mauler), else you'll find that all other classes indeed is unique (some more/less then others, and the different archetyps kinda does have the same things, as well as unique abilites/etc).

- Ok, a third one. The 3 realms, you could say Daoc is 3 games in one, more so PvE-wise (quite different landscapes, architecture etc).

Some other usefull info:

Search for a nice guild, that is pve (and pvp/rvr) oriented. It still exist such guilds in the game.

If you choose to start play in midgard (you could have characters in all three realms, but still you gotta start somewhere ;] ), you could pm me/post here at VN, and I could help you out with some newbie-lowbie gear.

I hope you try Daoc.

Don't need to buy the game, just the $15 bucks a month to keep your account active.

I would try the free trial though. I love DAoC but if you are wanting PvE and have been playnig the newer RPGs like you stated I don't think DAoC will fit your reqs as this game is old graphically and mechanically (no mail system or account wide vault which is standard now in all MMOs generally).

I would still give it a try. A good fit for you probably would be:

Lord of the Rings Online (free to play, great PvE, good graphics and a great community)

Final Fantasy XIV (PvE heaven. It is what Square Enix does and they do it well)

and as a LAST resort

World of Warcraft (CRAPPY community, crappy graphics but runs on any computer and is all about PvE)

If you are more interested in PVE than PVP then don't play DAOC. It's entire draw is the pvp whereas the PVE is very easy and boring.

For good PVE games you should try Everquest II or Lord of the Rings Online. You might also try Dungeons and Dragons Online, it's a pretty good game but a bit different than the typical MMORPG. Much easier to get groups in that game as the entire quest/adventure system is set up to promote grouping (doesn't penalize player experience rewards or loot rewards for being in a group). In fact I would probably recommend DDO to start so you can get the feeling of interacting with other real world people in groups as that is the biggest reason MMORGPs are so great in the first place.

Also good advice is to join a guild in any game you join so other players can help you out with questions and you can find some groups to join to adventure with.

Lord of the Rings online ='s free, and it's PVE is surprisingly fun. That's what I'd recommend.

I'm a huge fan of DAoC and still think it's one of the best (if not the best) Mmorpg out there, but if you are more after a good PVE experience it's not the place to start.

EQ2 is awesome for pve. I would pick that over daoc for pve.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions!

I'll have a look at EQ2, D&DOL and LOTR - especially since most of them are free.

I'll definently try the 14 day trial for DAOC as well though.

cheers
