When you get 1 million new accounts, 20% of your old player base back and double your revenue, that is a success in no uncertain terms.

Revenue - costs = profit. Doubling revenue does not mean double profit.

To be honest, i have been playing LOTRO and it really is a nice game, haven't played since beta! And i haven't paid for anything yet! i have enough turbine points almost to buy the expansion quest pack.

The game is beautiful and theres a BUTTLOAD of people running everywhere!

SOE's FTP Star offering has pulled in a lot of players which could impact Bioware's SW sales. Yes I know its Clone Wars but when kiddies ask to play a Star Wars game and one is free to play ..... no contest. Given that SW is another high cost game ... well what impacts Bioware impacts DAoC.

Uh. Seriously? The Clone Wars is a bunch of mini games. It's not remotely a MMO. It's not even interesting enough to make me, a huge Star Wars fan who is extremely bored of DAOC, try it out. It will have no noticeable impact on sales of TOR.

From what I've read about SW:TOR (which I admit isn't all that much).. it sounds like that too will be a bunch of mini games, AKA instanced PvE.

Not that I care... it's going to be a PvE game with some PvP tacked on when they get the time for it..

Which kind of means it isn't really a success... success would be if you had actually spend some real life money on the game in their shop. If all those million players are all playing for free without spending a penny, then it's actually a bigger cost for them as before.. since now they need more hardware to support the extra players.

Well that's not entirely true, i have considered paying RL money for stuff, but right now finances say i can't.

and from the ingame chatter, there are tons of people buying stuff

I don't see F2P working for DAoC, at least not like in LOTRO or DDO.

Which content (items, abilities, attributes) in DAoC would be compelling enough for a "non-subscriber" to pay for ?

Access to quests ? laughable

Storage space ? not an issue for RvR

Access to RvR ? Access to RR2, RR3, RR4, ... ?

In-game gold ? Perma-Buffs ?

Face it, w/o revamping the game, F2P doesn't work for DAoC. Unfortunately, this requires an amount of resources Mythic no longer has.

- capped buffs from the NPC buffers
- /level 20, 30, or even 50
- MLs
- CLs
- artifacts + artifact levels
- name and race changes
- rare items (ML 10, dragon, Greater Mythirians, MOH and other campaign rewards)
- RvR potions such as purge, cure nearsight, etc.
- xp, bp, and/or rp bonuses
- Ywain to Ywain transfer of toons
- etc. etc.

There is no shortage of things they could charge for.

This. You seem to forget that LotRO is an "epic PvE" game. Which means they can simply give you a taste of the game for free and if you want anything fancy, you pay for it. Since Turbine has been adding a lot of content to LotRO over the years, they do have a vast amount of different things to sell to the F2P crowd without really alienating the subscribers too much (who already have all of the content available to them). Not having "Content A" will not make your toon any less, but it will limit your game experience (in such a way that you as a player haven't experienced the content).

This is just a bad idea for a game centred around PvP/RvR, since effectively, in DAoC, you will have to pay for power.

That one is a bad example... as that's exactly the thing that should be avoided.. turns the PvP game into a pay to win game. (like buffbots.. which everybody will agree on was a very bad idea to 'allow' -- ofcourse Mythic never learns, so imagine what damage they could do if they added a F2P with in-game shop model!!).
