This is exactly why DAOC should go F2P. We could actually get real new content and upgrades.

yeah Turbine has done a good hybrid cash shop model
You can play for free but when you play for free it always comes at a small cost but you can get past them with the cash shop.. or subscribe and not have to worry about all the stuff in the cash shop it can just be more convenient if you want to spend a little extra but you never buy power that is the main thing!
Cash Shops should never ever sell power (armor/weapons/gold)

Most people use the store so for the most part isn't free. It really is a smart business model. You get people to look it over and get hooked, next thing they are spending money like a drunk sailor.
I have been enjoying LoTRO some, but it just isn't DAOC.

Calling it a success is premature imho.. should check again in 6 months time. It's only logical they get an increase in players, people that were never willing to even give the game a try, might be tempted to try it out now... doesn't mean they'll stick around.

When you get 1 million new accounts, 20% of your old player base back and double your revenue, that is a success in no uncertain terms.
Keeping it up is another issue, but the likelihood they will lose all that gain within 6 months is extremely unlikely. They are not in maintenance mode, they are pushing out new content and have a very active dev team.

They should have gone F2P instead of making Ywain. Then they could have had Devon, Killibury, and Bossiney and all of them would likely have had healthy populations. I'm not sure it would work anymore unless they opened a new server. Ywain is pretty much full as it is.

I thought Guild Wars pretty much proved the F2P model a success 4 years ago?
Granted some still insist it isn't a real MMO but CORP hybrid or whatever you want to call it, Guild Wars 2 is now being produced from that successful business model as a serious contender to WoW and staying with the F2P mechanic so I'd say they did pretty darn good.
If DAoC went free to play they would actually have to have some updates to the game once in awhile and to be honest, I don't think anyone over there wants to do that these days. Sad but true, such a shame too.

Guild wars is not a massive game...it's more akin to a LAN network game with your friends...

I saw a commercial for LOTROL on TV earlier today. It was kinda cheesey, using the scene in the movie trilogy where the wizard guy says "you shall not pass", but instead he says "you shall not pay" to advertise that the game is Free 2 Play.
Kinda wished that there would have been at least one commercial for DAoC on TV over the past 9 years the game has been running.
