wonder if someone would buy the game from mythic

buy the rights and make daoc 2 while maintaining daoc. let people know you are making daoc 2 so maintaince mode daoc isn't as bad.

this could be a brilliant move on a companys part. it is clear mythic has shoveled daoc under the rug.

Doubtful EA would sell the IP rights. Plus you'd have to invest the money into DAOC2, which would likely take another fifteen to twenty million dollars of development costs.

Cheaper to just make your own IP than buy the IP from a game from someone else.

Good point although you could just make a DAoC 2.0

take DAoC and then give it a hard upgrade. Transfer the game engine and such. Lua is very portable so you can keep the scripts and such. It wouldn't be DAoC 2 but it wouldn't be DAoC 1 either.

Then keep DAoC 1 and then make DAoC 2.0 a special server type and have everyone start a new. That way you can keep old players and bring in vets and new players since it will be a realtive new game and everyone is on equal footing. Remove a lot of the junk that makes this game noob unfriendly.

Porting over huge portions of code like that is nearly impossible to do without the original developers around. If your plan was to truly make a new game, but with a plot-related tie to the old, it'd be better to re-write the game from scratch. Overall, I think that would actually be better for DAOC than a DAOC 1.5 with a fresh start.

Things that are constant sources of QQ'ing such as LOS and pathing would be far better served being rewritten from scratch.

fair enough. I have never had to do anything even remotely like that when i was programming in high school since i had to write everything myself but that does make sense.

EA never sells the rights to their games.

The good news is everything that DAOC is, cannot be copyrighted...it's all public domain lore.

Any company that wanted to could just remake a game from scratch with the same mechanics/classes/lore as DAOC and call it something else and be fine.

They've admitted that most of their code, particularly the portions for archery, were a tangled mess. That's why they completely redid the archery code and made them casters.

thats not completely true... while the name "armsmen" isnt copyrighted, a character class Armsmen with the same skill tree as daoc.. is copyrighted..

the game mechanics are copyrighted, the map layouts, the ingame lore is based on public domain lore, but if you read the lore it takes place after king arthurs death, that means all the ingame lore is new and unique to camelot it may be based on public domain but the daoc lore itself is not public domain..

it would be realy easy to create a 3 realm game with the same basic mechanics and concepts... but you have to make it your own not try and copy camelot.
