Mythic sure knows how to take a game that should be fun and entertaining and make it frustrating and boring...

Such truth. Spot on.

The patcher is slightly annoying, but I wouldn't say it makes the game frustrating or boring overall... that's a little dramatic isn't it?

While the thread is about the "Annoying Patcher", the above quote is more encompassing than that. It is a totally spot on statement.

Mythic has taken a great concept and totally borked the implementation. That is why DAoC (DAoC = a better game concept than WoW) is dieing while the population of an inferior game concept like WoW is still growing. WoW, an inferior game concept to DAoC, had better implementation.

Edit to change 'has' to 'had'.

WoW is in no way an inferior game. Two totally different types of games. WoW found the niche market, and daoc didn't. The truth of the matter is that RvR or PvP (however you paint it, but it is all the same) will never be the most popular type of game. All game types like this flounder eventually due to lack of interest and content. Not to mention the dominant players tend to force the other players out. While in the other PvE oriented games the griefing and displeasure is far less common. And community is usually better. I've learned to live with the fact that PvP games will never be the most popular. I still miss UO and the FFA PvP before Felucca/Trammel and stat-loss.

I'll continue with daoc as a hobby. The patcher is by far the most annoying thing daoc has done in recent years. On my computer, which has an older processor and mobo, the patcher takes 5 minutes or so to run through if the game has not been run since boot up.

5 min?! Oh, well then I would agree, that bypassing this thing when there's no update is a big boon.

I don't exactly have a fast system... I think I'm running AMD Athlon 64 4000+, nVidia GeForce 7600GT and 2 GB DDR 400 ram. It only takes me maybe 90 seconds to run patcher first time after reboot.

I use LaunchPad now anyway, but I did use the batch file trick for a while too.
