I'm impressed by the amount of replies I've gotten here - not too shabby.

All in all, everything I've come across has been useful; thanks! Glad to hear I took a good starter class, and appreciate the information on the basics, gearing structure, endgame, etc. I feel that I can get around the accepted practice of multiboxing by just conning someone else in to playing with me... or something to that effect. If not, I'm sure I'll be fine.

That being said, before I get too far in to my trial, is there a particular server I should play on? With an understandably low population of players (and I'm by no means claiming the game is dead or dying - that's not the point of this topic), I would guess there's a server that everyone more or less agrees to play on. If so, which one is it? I liked the sound of Co-Op but that sort of undermines the point of the game... so I'm leaning towards a Normal server, which there seem to be a bunch of.

Also, if I go subscriber, where should I look for guilds? In-game? These forums here? Somewhere else?

Thanks in advance. I'm questiony, I know.

***As a sidenote, I'd like to say that b0xy, in addition to having a good, elongated reply, also has an obvious interest in Aqua Teen Hungerforce; probably the greatest television program known to man!

Guild info:

Albion

Midgard

Hibernia

Which server to play on?

Even though you see Ywain 1, Ywain 2 . . . .Ywain 10, Ywain is only 'one' server . There is only one Ywain server with 10 login servers. By having 10 login servers it allows returning players to transfer up to 100 old toons from the old archived servers over to Ywain.

Edit:

There is a great utility, character builder, called Charplan. You will find that it has the most up to date information concerning character abilities

For great maps, see valmerwolf's site.

The game UI is lacking. It would be best if you loaded a custom UI and they can be found by going to the UI VN boards ('bobs' is good and has features of many UIs).

Its for when you hit lvl 40+, and want to get those Master Levels (introduced in Trial of Atlantis Xpack), and specially as Armsman, I'm guessing you want up to and including Master Level (ML) 8 for Bodyguarding someone in RVR.

Thanks for the guild info. I'll poke around there today or tomorrow. How are the factions balanced out right now? Is there a pretty equal spread for Alb/Hib/Mid? And aside from the obvious race/class/territory differences, is there really anything too different about the factions?

Okay, I see. Ywain is one server. What about Avalon, Lyonesse, Stonehenge, Logres, and Dartmoor? Or are those just dead servers at this point?

Excellent. I was hoping there'd be a way to circumvent or otherwise improve the game's UI. Definitely something that I found to be cumbersome and distracting. Maps are always helpful, too. Thanks! I'll check it out when I have the time.

Hmm, okay. Thanks. I'll check it out at some point. For now, just kinda getting a feel for the game. Haven't played much and won't even be on tonight at all. I appreciate it, though! It's on my list of things to look at.

On the subject of UIs, I would also recommend downloading and using the old icons. I believe they come with bob's UI, but I'm not sure. In my opinion they're much cleaner and more distinct from one another. The new icons all look the same to me.

As for the factions, they're different in key ways but share a number of similarities as well. In recent times, Mid has been pretty powerful but the realms are more or less balanced. I really have no realm preference, but that comes more from me playing the PvP server for the majority of my DAoC experience. Before Mordred when I was RvRing, I played Albion exclusively on a Scout and an Infiltrator. I was pretty big on the whole realm thing back then.

the other servers are the euro servers are from what they say, are pretty much dead.

gaheris is pve only and mord is pvp free for all but averages roughly 10 players, if you want ffa pvp and daoc your better off with a freeshard.

Okay, sounds good to me. I'll double check whether or not bob's has it and go from there.

Hmm, yeah, I figured they'd have a few cosmetic differences but not much in the way of actual structure and whatnot. Since they're more or less balanced, I'll have to make my final choice based purely on background, I suppose.

Alrighty, that makes sense. Ywain-XXX it is, then.

Thanks all for the replies! If I come up with any more questions, I'll keep them coming. On a bit of a furlough for now; life catches up eventually and all.

Only thing I can say is don't get discouraged when you first start RvRing. The learning curve on pvp will be fairly rough and you'll be behind the power curve at first. I've had many friends who enjoyed this game until they rvr'd and then quit. If you want to take the solo route expect to be raped by larger numbers and rarely get a good fight. Your best bet is to find a friendly guild that will take you out to RvR. If you try to play with random people every night expect to have a few asshat groups out there. This game has its fair share of elitests, just like any other game.

Of course. Long as I have some backup, I think I'll be okay. I'll be poking around for guilds tomorrow and hooking a friend of mine up with the trial. Still a ways from RvR, but since I've heard levelling is quick, I suppose I'm closer than I'd expect. Thanks for the reply!
