Author Topic: Stumbled on this old description of TOA. Parts of it are rather humorous. . . in a good way. [Locked]

Best part I remember was the boats and hours of waiting for people to get somewhere.

That and the invisible mob thingy.

Think I quit for 6 months after that wipe.

I don't think Vyxar did get trolled. If that picture was aimed at me, then he would have just quoted me.

But yeah.

That other guy.

He got trolled.

All I read is some guy giving what he thought was funny commentary about TOA.

I didnt even smile a little bit as it wasnt even a little bit funny.

Lol. Good job missing the point. It was written before TOA launched, and it basically showed the key issue with that steaming pile of refuse. It's ok, you can live in your little toa fanboi world.

At the start of ToA I remember raids with 110/120 players and yet they failed.
It wasn't so easy as it's now.
But it was destructive for casual or solo players... and it was coincident with starting of WOW...

I don't think WoW had much to do with the failure of DAoC and ToA initially;
WoW was going to take some players in any event. No, I firmly believe ToA hurt DAoC for two reasons:

1. Too much, too extreme change that required more grinding. In those days just getting to 50 and geared up with crafted armor/weapons and maybe a dragon item or two was a huge accomplishment. Hell, people were still wearing epics when ToA
released!

2. Failure to support their crafting community. ToA should have allowed crafters to improve their skills/recipes so player made gear could be comparable to the insane new high powered ToA gear. This would have allowed casual players to remain competitive and then be free to pursue the best of what ToA had to offer in a more casual atmosphere.

If they had done that for the players, ToA would have been a joy to explore, instead of the millstone around the neck that sunk the enjoyment many had for this game. Not to mention ToA's compounding detrimental effects on the community, but I digress.

This guy's review was funny as hell and I have never even attempted any atlantis content.

Be very thankful then. When TOA went live, my wife and I gave it a good shot, joined a group and went out to see what Trials we could complete etc.

We spent 4 hours trying to resolve one trial alone. Every time we got close to finishing it, some idjit would do the one thing that we had been screaming not to do, and we would have to start all over again. My wife and I were literally screaming out loud in frustration at the stupidity of our realm mates. Nothing has ever made me hate other players in an MMO as much as that single trial did. Both relatively calm people and experienced players we were both ready to reach out over the internet and strangle people were it possible.

TOA was a well thought out, very carefully designed and balanced expansion - that had no place being added to this game. We were promised it wouldn't affect RVR balance from the get go, and of course it had more affect on RVR balance than anything before it. Kudos to whomever designed it for their design, but a curse on whoever decided it was needed

Everyone's gaming experience is greatly improved by not having experienced the original TOA. I am just contemplating returning to the game now, so I am not sure how much of a factor it is at the moment, hopefully it can be skipped entirely. Or has been removed. And burnt. And flushed

Unfortunately, the evil lives on. Its goofy skills and artifacts wreck game balance and make playing miserable. Zephyr, grapple and a host of other crap keep me away from ever coming back.

It's been at least three years since you played DAOC. Don't you have anything better to do with your life than gripe about how a game was three years ago when you quit?
