You're going to need top-notch gear to compete with 70% of the people out there. That being said, there are plenty of easy ways to make RPs. There's places like DF and Labby if you're a low RR stealther, and you can always run with the zerg.

In the battlegrounds, there are a lot of regular players, who have completely templated and decked out toons, run buffbots, etc. As long as you arent decked out in decent gear, you're going to get smoked be it at level 24 or level 50.

Honestly, I would look to roll something besides a thane at first, because hybrids have pretty complicated templates at first...and midgard is not cheap. I'd look at playing a Runemaster if you stay in mid. They have speed, and good standoff range so your lack of gear is less apparent. You can zerg surf, and would probably be desirable in PUGs as well.

Templating out casters is generally fairly cheap and easy compared to a hybrid, and the RM can also farm pretty well for scales and glass, which can all be used to deck out that thane later. I've used my RM to PL quite a bit as well. Look around on the vn boards and find a template. Try to get your artifacts around level 45 if you can, so your exp to level counts for your arts as well. You first template doesnt need to be uber, it needs to be servicable. It needs to be good enough to get yur out into the fight and having fun. As you gain money and experience with your class and get a better idea of what your playstyle is, you will figure out what you need for a better template.

Also, I would look for a guild with a lot of people in it, and preferably a good alliance. Often in /as or /gc people will be out leveling, and you might get an invite to come along. Most importanly, be nice to people. Don't beg, for items, leveling or cash. let the people in your guild and /as get to know you and nearly all of them will be willing to help you out with stuff they have in their vaults or help you level. Thats the most important thing a new guy can do is make friends...you'll accomplish much more then if you try to be anti social and just solo all the time. Just make sure you're willing to help yourself, and people will help you.

Good luck

Eh the game is still fun if you can manage you expectations. I think that a lot of the people who complain fail to adapt. It's certainly not the same game it was in 2001, but there's still fun to be had.

This game is eating itself. It tells new players that "its fun" and "try the battlegrounds after you get a template". It does not however hand them a template or teach them how to get or fund their own. The learning curve to compete is steep and noobs get chewed up and spat out before they can ever hope to adjust. Then they leave wondering why they even bothered. I've brought many people to DAOC and given them every tool to survive and they still left in disgust. Its not fun anymore and anyone who has played a recent MMO can tell immediately.

You must not play the same Daoc as me. Not saying you're 100% wrong, but the "truth"/"fact" of people seems to differ here.

(anyway, the inc patch(es) should be able to remedy your side of the story somewhat, so to speak).

Daoc is a game that in my experience requires a lot more skill than many other pvp games. What I mean is that it is not something you can pick up and be good at quickly and it is something you have to keep up with constant practice to even play adequately. Anyone that takes any time off of this game comes back and gets their ass handed them for a while before getting their skills back.

Its not like wow where you can reactivate after a year off and be destroying battleground twinks with a brand new character in a few days. The issue with daoc is that the playerbase, for the most part, has been playing the game for damn near a decade and they know all the tricks and are in fair practice. Don't let it discourage you. Becoming good, or even adequate, at daoc is a struggle that carries with it a better reward than any other pvp game I have ever experienced.

SO I have played for 2 days and am already level 30, lol. I went through the BGs, got owned in under 5 seconds in pvp all the time. Seem to be a lot of Twinks around these parts. How long can I expect to go until I can have a fair fight? I am playing a Thane who I thought would be pretty tough to take down but I am just getting owned by basically anyone who somehow do 1/2 my life bar in under 2 seconds most the time. Is this just what I can expect pvp to be like? Or is it safe to assume eventually there will be actual time to fight back? Is endgame all about 5 second KOs?

Is this more of a DAOC classic experience I am looking for or was DAOC always like this?

You will never catch up. LOL.

This from a guy who gave up because he couldn't hack learning a new system. Give it up dude.

So I am level 45 now with a good chunk of my dragonslayer armor from camping scales/buying scales. I have yet to try out the higher level pvp because I know if I am not 50 I will get blown away. I am hoping that with a near complete Dragonslayer suit that I will be competative in pvp/rvr once I hit 50.

I am having fun as a Thane still. The dragonslayer armor will max a bunch of my stats. Has not been all that tough to template. My STR/DEX was maxed so fast that now I can try to cap my resistances.

I doubt someone with 10% faster cast speed would have "that" much of an advantage over me. Seems like skill would come into play once I start maxing my stats and it also looks like its fairly easy to get a few rvr ranks fast for even more of an even fight.

I don't actually play in battlegrounds so YMMV but it seems like for a genuinely new player you might want to take awhile in the cathal valley bg if you want to have soloish fights because if you think getting owned in 5 seconds in the early bg's by twinks was fast and frustrating your head will spin at how fast you are gonna die as a very green rr2-3.

OTOH if you are ok with being part of the zerg it feels like(been mostly haunting mid lately myself) that there has is a battle group that you can get by with. However, you won't really learn to play your toon all that much in those situations which is why a quieter place like CV with nobody who is more than a few realm ranks ahead of you would seem beneficial.
