Three questions please =)
I saw the servers were all merged and was interested in playing if the playerbase was good again. It sounds like the rvr/BGs are usually bumpin?
Can I expect to get mowed down in pvp to people who have been playing for years constantly? Or will I run into a good amount of people with my current gear level?
Which realms are most/under populated? I never like playing the leader so I have more people to kill. lol.
Thanks for your time.

Thidranki and Molvik are the most populated BGs. Thidranki's good for some solo action. Not enough people in there for grouping to be worth it. Molvik is normally very busy, primarily a big cluster at the central keep but not much small man action. Might be different for you depending on when you play; I'm US prime time.
The consensus in these types of threads is that most people on new characters run the Labyrinth quite a bit until they've got some realm ranks, then venture out into NF zerging/small man/8v8/whatever. I just started fresh on hib a few months ago and am about to test that theory out.
For a while it seemed like hib was the most underpopulated. Now we have four relics and I'm not so sure anymore... as soon as we lose a few, I'm sure a bunch of people will jump ship. If you start out hib, what's worked for me as far as getting established is raising alchemy and spellcrafting. Takes maybe 20 plat to fund them both to LGM, but you can farm the low level dungeons for good thidranki gear drops and sell some of them for exorbitant amounts on the CM. Shoot me a tell in game and I'll get you set up with a house and whatnot if you'd like.

There is generally 1 or 2 large BGs nightly in big boy RvR, generally Molvik + Thid are your action points for Battlegrounds. If you like the zerg warfare of DAoC, then there is a ton of action.

You can expect for your first few RRs to be squishy as hell, even on something like a heavy tank. If you're running BGs there are people who ONLY play there and will put you down pretty easy in basic armor. If you're 50 and not running a template, most will also kill you.

Ugh, which ever realm doesn't have any relics normally. Usually it's Hibernia; but because they have power relics + str relic there are TONS of them currently. Mid is generally the best option to be perfectly honest, sometimes it zergs hard, but it's generally behind Albion in most cases.

Most of the people that have been playing for years constantly have not improved. For the most part it will come down to numbers and some basic familiarity on classes and mechanics.

You will likely be way under-geared and ripped early on. But the grind is not bad compared to many other games.

SO I have played for 2 days and am already level 30, lol. I went through the BGs, got owned in under 5 seconds in pvp all the time. Seem to be a lot of Twinks around these parts. How long can I expect to go until I can have a fair fight? I am playing a Thane who I thought would be pretty tough to take down but I am just getting owned by basically anyone who somehow do 1/2 my life bar in under 2 seconds most the time. Is this just what I can expect pvp to be like? Or is it safe to assume eventually there will be actual time to fight back? Is endgame all about 5 second KOs?
Is this more of a DAOC classic experience I am looking for or was DAOC always like this?

If you intend to spend some time in each BG, then it's usually a good idea to get to the highest level possible for that BG. Then use /xp off to turn off xp, so you can build your rps without leveling out of the BG.
Then look at your gear. Gear is highly important in surviving and a good template for your level will help a lot. I'd suggest looking in the Midgard tank forums on VN here as they will probably have some information on templates for Molvik etc.
Next, try to group up. Being in a group with a healing class who knows what they are doing can boost your survivability immensely. Pay attention to any advice your groupmates might give you, as some of it may be valuable.
Then the rest of what you need - experience - will come with time.

First off, check your resists. I would expect that you are capped on Thane basic stats - Str, Con, Pie, Dex, Qui, but that your resists are probably quite low.
Secondly, and it does break my heart to say it, but Thanes just aren't that good at soloing (and indeed are probably the least desired Mid class out there). They don't have tank hitpoints (I believe they are on the Seer hitpoint table), they are slow casters (they can't benefit from shaman acuity buffs) and their weapon damage is just grim.
Not good news for you I'm afraid.

If u want to stick to mid i always found a Bonedancer and a hunter quite fun in the BGs. I would deffinately stay in the Bgs for a while as when u hit 50 u will need to do a lot of pve to get your template in order. GL.
