This game's been "winding down" for like 6 years. Seems like the populations been relatively stable for the last year or two. I wouldn't worry too much if it's been a slow week.

Agreed. People have been saying DAoC is dieing ever since ToA, but keeps limping along. And, yes, down to 1 viable server is sad compared to its early years, plus little to no involvement from the development crew. The good news is, DAoC has a rabid fan base that will most likely never be happy with any other MMO.

No telling what the future holds. I think we should pray that StarWars does well. If it flops, I look for EA to abandon their MMO division all together, and that could be the ultimate end to DAoC.

/speculation.

Summer time always seems slower to me anyway. People are outdoors more, traveling, vacations, etc...

DAOC has been on a downward spiral since December 7, 2004(Catacombs)

when they failed to compete with the FEATURES and UTILITIES that World of Warcraft brought to the gaming world.

Hate to say it, but DAOC is just too clunky to play. I loved this game for many years but when you play some of the other MMO products out there and the come back, it's painful. I mean this with respect to the UI and other functions of the game.

Hard to disagree that it is the best RvR system out there though!

I think your right on. I know I jumped to WoW just because of the polish of the game itself. Was so tired of all the broken things and bad UI in DAOC. And the timing of WoW's release was just before Catacombs.

Today I miss DAOC a lot more then I miss WoW though.

When Ywain went live, we were bouncing off the cap of 4000 per server so often they tweaked it up by a couple hundred so we wouldn't hit cap so often.

These days, not so much.

That said, we get a slowdown pretty much every year during the last month of school and the first month out of school. It'll prolly pick up again a week or so after the 4th of July....

Nice post captain obvious. I don't think you could have made a more generalized statement. This isn't news to anyone http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-2.png

The fact is DAoC still has the population of an old world server i.e. "Lancelot" circa 2001. Action can be found 24/7 and this is more than enough to keep the player base around. I see new or returning players everyday; the love is still there.

DAoC began winding down about 9-12 months after launch as indicated by the graph that shows the population stopped growing 9-12 months after launch. The population is not static but has noobs constantly creating new accounts as well as existing players failing to renew and other existing players renewing. The game population is growing or dieing but never static/level.

When the number of subs leveled off what really happened, the bleeding caught up with the noobs coming to the game. That means the typical life span of a noob was only 9-12 months. (I said, “typical”. Exceptions do not negate the rule.)

Mythic should have seen that there was a huge problem slapping them in the face and done things to fix it but as per typical Mythic they misunderstood the problem.

It was not Cat that killed the game or TOA that killed the game. The game began dieing long before those expansions happened. I do believe that TOA cause terrible harm (almost all expansions caused some harm as well as good) but the game started dieing long before most people think.
