Questing and grouping would have to work now days. The way they have screwed up the EXP in todays game it is alot quicker to just solo all the way up or get pl'd. A quest line would be the best option.
I quit just about every other mmo because of the mindless questing

Some questing i dont mind, all questing id hate. I like to just duke it out sometimes also but you say mindless questing well others would say mindless plain killing. Both can get old. No way really other than questing to get people back to grouping up for long stints. Unless they raised the group exp bonus and dropped the solo exp a bit. But then you'd have more pl's out there than ever. With even less actually grouping and all members of the group doing work.

Questing and grouping oppose each other. The best time and xp in daoc was grouping and just killing camps. Questing with a group is a headache.
May just be nostalgia talking but I used to love gathering up at PKB around level 8 to try and get a Mithra group together...after you'd camped the boulderlings of course. God, I haven't had a PUG for just leveling in so long and back in those days I actually used the friends list. May not be as fast but much more fun than mindless questing imo. Seems that people prefer easy to fun though...

Then off to the plains. Starting with adder's, nymphs, mephits, then slaver groups, and finally to BB (broken bridge), Salisbury Giants, and cockatrice's. Then you can get a Keltoi group.
Could do this now but you'd be solo and level 1 through Keltoi in 3 hours.

Lol ya Gothwaite rules
I remember after playing Daoc the first week i signed up for it, I was on a cheap cheap computer and I hit lvl 6or 7 ran up the hill in Camelot Hills, ran into the blue portal and my screen went black for what seemed like forever, right when I was about to give up and figured the game crashed, that SI music came on the screen with the harbor scene
Ya nostalgia

1) I always found it annoying starting a new character at level 1 as a base class and having nothing but the crap baseline abilities to use and needing to save up my spec points for when I chose my real class at level 5. Getting rid of those few levels of base class tedium was a good idea.
2) My only complaint with the tutorial zone is it takes too long to run through it to the exit porter if you don't want to level there. They should add an exit porter right where your new character spawns. I prefer to grind mobs or task dungeons at that level rather than running all the hell over the place doing quests.

As a returning player who doesn't have a lot of time and doesn't have a computer that can run two accounts, I can say that I wouldn't even have thought of resubbing without a lot of these changes.
2003-2005 I enjoyed doing all the PvE and the sense of accomplishment you get from completing them, as well as being able to smash people in RvR who hadn't, but I don't have time to endlessly farm plat or attempt buggy encounters anymore. RvR has always been the best aspect of this game and getting people there faster is the best thing for keeping it alive. If it were up to me, I'd make it even a bit faster to get to 50, CL10, ML10 and fully templated.
I was still on the fence about returning just due to the bot issue. I know everyone will say that it's an RvR game and we're supposed to be grouped and getting buffs from all the enhance clerics that are begging for PUGs (sarcasm) but 9 times out of 10 I'm only on for an hour or two and that's not enough time to make the most of a group, especially a PUG. So it basically leaves you with the choice of playing a Vamp, Friar, Cleric, Heretic, Shaman, or being at a slight disadvantage on the class of your choice (theurg in my case). I will say that I've had decent luck in Molvik asking for buffs. Tried it in lab and CS a few times and just got ridiculed.
Summary:
Changes to reduce PvE are good. If you're mad about it, you're probably just bummed that you can't stomp untemped ML0 noobs as frequently.
