Can't wait for the 500 gold spammers flooding region and half of the server using hacks and cheats. Ah the joys of f2p!
I wonder how much the OP has ever invested in a F2P game...most that shout about it, just want to play for free.. but F2P isn't about that, since no company is going to keep hardware and support around for something that doesn't bring in cash!

If F2P games didn't bring in cash, how come F2P games are making record profit (Read the article in the original post), while DAOC is internally talking about shutting down for good? (Closing Mythic)

Would you pay for new stuff every week that would most likley bring you up to the same levels or higher as an account + buffbot today?

Astral items, glass, scales, vault space, previous seasonal items, level scrolls (5 levels a pop), CL scrolls, ML scrolls, horses, epic armor, respecs, profiles (so you won't need as many respecs lol), buff pots that offer red level buffs...the list goes on and on....
Yeah, like I said, if they went F2P before they made all the above ridiculously easy to attain, it could have been viable. But honestly, there just wouldn't be enough people who would buy glass? Are you serious? Do you really think
there are enough people who would buy vault space to pay for the game?
I'm not trying to be a jerk here, just realistic. I'd love a F2P model for daoc. The sad reality is that going F2P would have required some serious leadership and vision at a time when few were doing F2P, and that ship sailed about 3 years ago.
I don't think those items are very easily obtained. If you have the ability to farm effectively or have an astronomical amount of plat then sure; it is very easy. A lot of returning players don't have that ease though.
Also, consumables is where the money really is. Buff pots being a prime example. People will keep coming back to buy them. XP and RP increase items being the same. Another good one is dungeon scrolls, CL/ML respecs as well. Hell, why not make a race reset. Use the scroll and u can reset your class's race. Go from a troll shammy to a koby shammy while maintaining your spec and levels and such.
Also, a name reset. Any character that hasn't been logged in within 3 years loses their names. Upon loggin in (should said account be renewed) they'd be prompted to choose a new name. Then sell individual character rename scrolls. 1 use per character to rename your toon. With a VAST amount of names free'd up, plenty of people would do this. I would

These are some great ideas!
How about a race-change potion? They already have temporary ones in the game.
I'd pay $20 to change my Savage to a Troll, and I'm sure plenty of others would too.
I'd probably buy bonus-RP scrolls too, but I can't see veterans buying much else, other than Rp/Name change/race change.
But that's not WHO they'd make their money off of. The influx of NEW players, who would buy glass, items, XP bonus, buff potions, all of the other stuff new players need to catch up to veterans.
Not to mention, if the game went Free to Play - they could make money from in-game advertising. Replace those old, idiotic load screens with web-based advertisements to generate income.

Coming up with stuff to sell in a DAOC cash shop is not a problem as is obvious from all the potential items listed in this thread. The real difficulty in taking DAOC F2P is convincing EA to spend the money to do the programming to create the cash shop and to pay for at least one additional new server since there would be too many people trying out a F2P DAOC than could fit on Ywain.

Obviously, the F2P model pays for itself. Look at Global Agenda. This game lost money hand over fist, but now that it's F2P has recouped all of that money in a matter of a week.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Ywain actually 10 servers?
Who spent the money on DAOC's new website and features? Perhaps this is a prelude to them jumping on the F2P bandwagon?

I didn't see the word profit mentioned in the article.
Extra revenue - yes; extra players - yes ..... which means extra costs.
Does the extra revenue exceed the extra costs?
Will the initial 'flood' of interest when a game first goes F2P continue once the next F2P (and the next) comes out?

Global Agenda posted: “We recently shifted it in the past quarter to free to play and we’ve only seen great things out of that decision,†said Harris. “We have many many more people creating accounts every day, many more people playing concurrently, our revenues are higher than they ever have been before which means we can develop content and put it into the game faster than ever before.â€
Gervaise, you do realize that DAOC is essentially dead, right?
A few hundred live players during primetime is not a sustainable business model, and certainly not going to rake in the money for there to ever be any positive overhauls. (Like to the UI)

F2P may pay for itself over time, but there's a period of initial investment where they would be paying programmers to make the changes for F2P while the game would still be a monthly subscription. It's that investment that I have a hard time seeing EA make.
No Ywain is not really 10 servers. It does have 10 different character lobbies to allow players to have more characters than would fit on a single server and 10 housing zones. Aside from those things, it's a single server.
