Ywain is the server you wanna be joinin for the pvp ruleset

It's the main populated server

You have Ywain 1 - 10 to choose from however they are all the same cluster, the number you choose will only effect where you buy a house lot (so for this I would recommend 6-9 maybe which should hopefully be less populated)

The game just had a complete overhaul of starter zones and battlegrounds etc so it's currently never been easier to level up and get into the action.

Posting queries here is a good start when you get stuck or need something explaining but as always with a public forum... expect the trolls

Welcome to DAOC~

thx mate. also from what i gather there is 3 realms (teams) to choose from? any advice on this and a start up toon to get used to the game, looks like there is a lot of options. Also is there still much activity on this game? also what are the f2p restrictions?

Plenty of activity left sure

As for the realms, you're right there are 3.

Which to choose is really down to your playstyle etc

Hibernia is usually the underpopulated (although not right now, they're dominating everything)

However Hib is usually quite an elitest realm to get grouped on and will probably cause you alot more frustration than it's worth

Albion and Midgard are usually the realms better suited for "zerging" (following 1 guy with 100+ players and mindlessly running over anything in your path)

I don't play Mid/Alb too much myself but I've found they are much more friendly towards unknown/new players etc so to be honest with you, I would go with one of those.

As for class... well there's alot to choose from and each unique

Plenty of people will jump in and correct me as to what I suggest being the wrong choice for a new player but I would maybe start life on something like a Heretic on Albion

It's a class that you can easily level up by yourself if you have to, has good DPS, can buff itself, doesn't die in 2 shots, you have heals etc. Just a nice all round class to be honest.

Everything is viable however some are less viable to run around by yourself on

i.e a wizard - It has really nice DPS but anything that attacks you in melee will drop you pretty quick. Not such a problem if you're in a group but if you're leveling by yourself it will probably be quite frustrating for a new player.

There is a 5 minute timer to swap between each realm but given how easy it is to level up these days you might just find yourself grinding a few of the characters up to the 20's to see what they're about.

Takes about 2/3 hours to get into the 20's just by yourself, even quicker if you can get a group.

Oh and when going through the starter zone, I would recommend speaking to all the NPC's with books floating above their heads - they give you a rundown on different game mechanics etc which are quite useful

While I agree with most of what Corfel says, remember his opinion is purely subjective. All 3 realms zerg at times, and all 3 realms have friendly players.

I personally considered Hib to be the most friendly realm, hence why all my characters are Hibs.

On Albion Heretic are an excellent choice for a first class. Friar's are decent as well, though maybe a bit too advanced for a first class, I don't know.
On Hibernia I'd recommend maybe a Vampiir. They are a great solo class, but that's basicly all they are. They are selfbuffed and a bit of extra run speed.
On Midgard a Bonedancer is always a great choice for a first class. They got loads of abilities but are fairly easy to handle.

ninjaedit: Oh, and sign up! DAoC is great once you get to know the game mechanics. Once you do, there is no going back :-)
