This is how DAoC mail should work, if it were ever implemented.

You get a stone. You /use said stone. A messenger appears!

You hand him your message or items to be delivered.

He then runs off and finds said person. If they are logged off, it will take the mail to his/her house on the account deposited in a mailbox. If they do not have a house on the account, they don't get mail.

Reuse: 30 minutes.

Edit to add: Stone costs 20p(cheap these days) Also, you need to buy a mailbox for your house for 50p.

period.

I kind of like this idea. Totally different but still pretty in line with the Dark Age era type thing. I dig it.

Also, the messenger has to be a Lurikeen. Or some other small race.

and where are you getting the information on how the characters are stored?

cause i've never seen mythic release that information...

if its based on the DOL project, that is 3rd party server software, built up completely from scratch... with no mythic code.. so the way DOL stores files isnt the same as the way Mythic stores files...

No, Mark Jacobs released this information himself...he said that they had originally planned on using Oracle databases. But the Oracle company quoted a licencing fee of $900,000 and they laughed at it and went with a "flat file system" instead.

Nice idea.

But if you are in rvr combat and suddenly a messenger arrives it's gonna be strange. You could crash server by sending messages to every member of a zerg

Check Scott Jennings second comment. Also FYI DOL is based on stolen mythic code.

Also I agree mail would be easy to do if they put it in a separate zone like housing with it's own database. I suspect they don't want to do that because players are used to having mailboxes all over the world which can not be done with the housing CM interface (note that you can't even buy cross-zone with CMs, you have to zone to the area with the merchant).

Players would not be restricted to using Mail in just a housing-like area. As an example, Mythic can place an ME interface anywhere they want even though the ME gives access to the CMs that are part of Housing/Foundations. Mythic could put MEs in any city, town or zone.

It is the same with Mail. Once a separate Mail database was designed and the interface created, Mythic could put a Mail interface (Mailbox or Mail Carrier) in any location, any zone.

edit: But, even if the only location to find a Mailbox would be next to a ME in housing, or in a post office within the capitol cities, that would be better than not having any kind of Mail.

World of Warcraft has made it so that millions upon millions of players like MMO's, but Mythic can't even make DAoC user friendly enough to capitalize on this boom in MMO demand.

DAoC is from an older time period where people are punished for their mistakes. Newer games aim to attract an entirely different audience by cheapening the definition of winning by including inconsequential challenges and rewards, and dumbing down basic game mechanics. There is no basis for comparison.
