Played lots of MMOs and played this game for a short period way, way back when but was honestly too young and too short of an attention span at the time to seriously get involved with the game. I love organized PvP with people who are willing to put in the work required to achieve the needed teamwork and are more worried about the team than themselves and being "told what to do." Too many chiefs, not enough indians is a recipe for failure no matter what.

I'm sick of games with crappy PvP systems that leave me disappointed in the end, and the DaOC RvR system has always appealed to me.

Main questions I'm hoping to get some response on:

Are there enough people still playing for it to seriously be worthwhile trying out the game? Looking for honest opinions here. I have played games with small populations where pretty much everyone involved knows everyone else and enjoyed that, so I don't mind that part so long as the fighting is consistent and regular.

What realm would you recommend I play on? I have no real personal preference and would be looking to go to whichever realm I'm most likely to get good fights on. Also take into account the following point in this.

My playstyle leans towards being a healer and support player through and through. I've tried other roles and, while I can do them successfully, I always come back to healing because I enjoy it the most and always find myself frustrated when I'm not doing it. Within that, my preference is towards more heavy-armor, able to take some damage healers vs. cloth healers (think Holy Paladin in WoW or Combat Medic Commando in SW:TOR). What is the most effective PvP healer (and is there a specific realm that has one that is more effective than others?).

Thanks.

Its a great game. You can play/try all realms. You dont have to stick with one.

Main healers in each realm is

Healer - Midgard
Cleric - Albion
Druid - Hibernia

Other healing classes include

Warden - high defense class, some melee dps (not a lot)
Bard - Main speed class in Hib. Also the main CC class. A lot of responsibility as your group pretty much hinges on a well played Bard

Friar - Great secondary support in any Albion group, average melee capabilities but has a lot of survival tools
Heretic - Can play as a Caster, tank'ish, or full support

Shaman - A class with a ton of utility, typically should only be backup heals
Valkyrie - Great melee class, with good healing capabilities

Download the program daoc charplan, best toon planner there is for this game. This will let you look at all the different healing classes and their abilities. Personally I love my heretic: 48 rejuv / 50 enhance / 28 shield / 15 flex. With full buffs + self buffs my squishy cloth armor is on par with plate armor, self buff 10% resist pierce so my pulsing nukes hit harder, I block like mad with Mastery of Blocking 3, champ styles offset the low wep spec if you absolutely have to melee, and there's heals to backup your main healer. Plus the pulsing nukes tend to peel enemies off your healer pretty quick. If nuking isn't your thing, you can always spec enhance/ wep/ shield and hand out some beatdowns because all your heals are baseline anyway, which is why you will always be backup heals.

Europe servers Transfered to US and Merged with all the server into one big cluster and that's Ywain1-10(the only difference is the housing region)there's Quite a lot of people and most of them are Dedicated fans , so the game won't be dying anytime soon.
Not everyone knows each other , People tend to have loads of Characters and Some people , mostly soloers won't add others if they have a good reputation or they know them since you can also play a different realm on the same server with 5mins cooldown in order to change between realms.

I would recommend you to chose the Class healer(Midgard) , they are the primary Healing&Support class of Midgard(Depends on Spec).
On Support Spec(I Believe it's Pac)they gain Stun/Root/mezz Aoe and instant's making them a pretty Nice Crown Control Class.

if you want to do the heavy healing in the group you have to pick one of the main healer types. survivability is high on every one.

if you want to be able to protect in general and heal i also suggest a warden. If my cleric wasnt close to RR9L0 i would love to invest my time in a warden.

I agree. My comment comes from seeing people post that they're interested, then we reply, then after a bunch of replies the OP comes back and says "it isn't f2p? paying money is bogus bro" and disappears, so I just wanted to get that out of the way.
