Hey gang!

I'm a returning player since the beginning of DAOC days. I miss the action!

A lot has probably changed in the game since I've last played so I'm slowly relearning the mechanics. Like strafing speed / being interupted / quick casting and all that. It's hard going from modern MMO's back to DAOC playstyle.

My question is simple, but most of the posts I see in relations to it are very old. I'm not sure if there are NEW templates these days, or new builds with updated patchs.

- What ROLE (any realm) is simple to learn. What Role can I be a newbie at but still be effective. Are there classes that don't have 10 ability chains to concentrate on with correct character positioning?

I understand that all classes are difficult to MASTER. But what are effective while being novice? Can a Warrior / Armsman / Hero still plow fairly well while being terrible at stance dancing? aka switching from shield to 2h.

Can I rely on /stick /face for pvp? Or do noobs do that.

Currently I'm playing an Eldritch for the 1% chance I get to freely cast my chaotic bolts on people. Very amusing and fun! But once ANYONE attacks me, the noob in me shines and I instantly die. However the videos I watch - good eld's are able to quick cast mez / stun, and run. Or they have help from peelers in the group.

I don't think casters are my cup of tea! Anyone please help.

Also if there are any guilds willing to teach a newbie like myself, let me know. I'd be happy to transfer realms. I've got ventrilo!

are you playing 8man/zerg or solo/smallscale?
the classes easy to play are wizard, runemaster and enchanter. nothing else that easy to learn, only a few buttons on your taskbar.

tanks are harder to play. mercs/berserkers/champions for exemple have to interupt enemy casting classes without beeing dumped.
defensive tanks are not in great demand, that should be their hardest problem.

//i forgot: i don't know which realm rank you already have, but as an low rr toon todays rvr is not that awesome. bite through it till you are at least ~rank 6-7.

I'm thinking of getting a character to 50 so I can start popping out /level 20 characters in Thidranki to see what style I like.

The easiest classes to master are pure damage casters (fire wizard, dark or runecarving runemaster, bainshee, and a few others) and bow-focused archers (scout or ranger). To play any kind of melee class well, you will need to master a lot more skills (target selection, assisting, positional attacks, style rotations, Banelord and other MLs, etc.), will need a higher end item template, and will need better buffs than you can get from the buff NPCs at the borderkeeps.

Thanks for the replies.

As for pure casters to master. Currently playing a Light Eldritch.

I find it hard to NS / Mez - by the time it's over, I'm dead. Do fire wizards have any sort of NS or Mez to worry about? I'd rather another class (sorc / bard / healers) worry about getting off a mez and I concentrate on blowing things up.

Maybe I should start with a fire wiz? and accept dieing a lot?

Can I root / DD? or would Root break? Is it better to Root / RUN / DD?

Fire wiz could be a good choice, just try to make sure you are at max range, unload with both bolts and if they are still alive follow up with the DD+heat debuff nuke ( it hits harder than the reg DD, has only has a slightly longer cast time - 2.8s vs 2.6s , also the debuff will increase damage and should decrease the number of resists you get)

If you get into trouble just QC root and run, by the time u get some range between you and them your bolts should be off cooldown. I recently came back after 6 yr break, I have been leveling multiple toons, my fire wiz is 36 atm and he has been tons of fun so far.

You could spec fire/earth to get NS but for now I would suggest just spend all points of raising fire. Later once you are higher lvl and have gotten back your mojo you can try dif specs to add more utility.

Cabalist could be another option , send in pet - let him get a few hits to get aggro then cast DOT and/or nuke em down with lifetap. I would suggest body spec for the hard hitting LT nuke. LT casters are nice because if you take some damage (and manage to survive it) you can LT back up to full health on the next pull. Be sure that if you need to QC root you put pet on passive or he will break root. Cabbi pets can tank fairly well and you get a pet heal so you can let them do the work while you are learning to master your class.

If you are having problems getting ganked, possibly take a break from BGs for while until you master your toon, do task dungeons or just grind on mobs your lvl in open areas

/level doesn't work on Ywain.

And isn't needed anyway. You can make a level 20 in an hour or two without PL. Add another 20 minutes for a level 24....

Since it appears you can understand the interrupt code and positional styles and how to get them off and how to prevent them you are off to a good start.

The role you play is different depending on who you are playing with and what you are doing even within 1 class or class type. I think a lot of the advice you are going to get is going conflate knowing/playing your class and knowing/playing your role. The good news is that even if all you know is that you don't know your role you are way ahead of people who have been playing for ~10 years.

Again, interrupt code + positional styles and you are most of the way there. Throw in weapon swapping (not switching between s/s to 2h but dropping in from inventory) and juggling timers and such and you have more than most people.

The heavy tanks are about as simple and effective as you can get.

Depends what you mean by rely. You will use them constantly but like a hammer is a tool that you wouldn't use to start your car with you need to just learn their limitations.

But rather than play paper daoc just play the game and when you notice that someone is doing something you don't understand try to figure it out and counter it.

Enjoy being a noob it's the best part of gaming.

Outright resists are based purely on spell level vs enemy level, has nothing to do with being debuffed. Debuffing will simply increase damage.
